〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Arthur
CHARACTER AGE: ~30
SERIES: Inception
CHRONOLOGY: Post-canon, after landing at LAX.
CLASS: Anti-Hero
HOUSING: Individual housing, no preference as to location.
BACKGROUND: Here is an overview of Inception and here is a page specifically for Arthur's role in it.
PERSONALITY:The first thing to keep in mind about Arthur, is that he is an unapologetic, unrepentant criminal. Whatever else goes on in his head, he's a thief and a con-man of sorts who has no moral or ethical issues with violating people's privacy and mucking about in their minds. He's not cruel, or evil, by any means, but he is certainly amoral. He's not a nice guy, and he's rarely altruistic. He has objections to inception, not because he thinks it's wrong to break into someone's mind without their consent and manipulate them into doing what you want them to do, but because he just doesn't think it's possible.
And that's where we come to another really important trait of Arthur's - his practicality. You might not think a job that's all about doing the impossible in dreams would require someone like this, but it does, and Arthur is incredibly good at it. He's the perfect foil for Cobb, in fact: where Cobb is a big ideas guy, a visionary who can think outside the box, Arthur is the one who takes those ideas and finds ways to actually make them happen. Arthur is the details man, he's the problem solver ("how do I drop you without gravity?") and the problem finder ("I hope you have something more elegant in mind than shooting me in the head.")
Needless to say, Arthur is very good at his job, and he takes it pretty seriously. This may lead some (Eames) to suggest he's a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, because he tends to be the guy who tries to poke holes in everyone's big ideas, he finds the problems and the points where things could go bad. However, Arthur is certainly not lacking in humor - he jokes occasionally with Eames and even Ariadne. As a matter of fact, Arthur tricks Ariadne into kissing him in the middle of a job, possibly the most unprofessional thing anyone does in the film - it also would've been kind of a dick move, except Ariadne didn't seem to mind it all that much. Remember what I said about not nice. His relationship with Eames is a bit tense - the two men don't seem to get along very well, clearly have some kind of history, and at several points make disparaging comments towards each other. However, on the job, they work well as a team and seem to trust each other to do their jobs. With Ariadne, Arthur appears more laid-back, and often takes on the role of instructor, teaching her about paradoxical architecture.
Arthur can come across as pretty serious a lot of the time but he's definitely capable of relaxing, having fun, and snarking at others. He's also got a lot more imagination than people might like to give him credit for. He does figure out how to drop them in zero-gravity, after all. He's quite adaptable, and able to think on his feet in a situation that can change at any time, and easily turn from peaceful to hostile. Arthur's creativity shows right down to the clothes he wears - he's a snappy dresser, and he likes doing daring things with colors, patterns and textures. He appreciates quality, and usually dresses better than Cobb.
Arthur is very much the most grounded member of the inception team, but he also clearly loves dream sharing. I'd venture to say he's a bit of an adrenaline junkie - he relishes a challenge, has no problem throwing himself into a fight in a dream. In fact, as the "point man" (a term used in marketing material for the film but never actually used in the movie), Arthur is often the dreamer, which is the riskiest role on a job - he has to draw the projections away from the other team members, giving them enough time to complete the job. His totem is a loaded die, which says a lot about him - he enjoys the game, but always makes sure to stack the odds in his favor.
All this may make Arthur seem a little cold, or unfeeling. This is not the case, however. As a matter of fact, Arthur is an extremely loyal friend to those he considers such - mostly Cobb. He's worked with Cobb for some time, despite the man's obviously-deteriorating mental state, and he continues to stick with him even on a job he doesn't believe is possible - because Cobb asks him to, because Cobb believes this might allow him to get back to his kids. Arthur also knew Cobb's late wife, Mal, and speaks of her with affection, saying that she was "lovely". He's clearly capable of caring for others,
and is an extremely reliable and loyal friend and business associate. He may try to keep his life compartmentalized, and probably does a pretty good job of it on the whole, but people like Cobb and Mal are certainly able to get under his skin and get him to really care.
POWER: (note: Arthur is canonically non-powered) Shared dreams: Arthur can enter the dreams of others to manipulate them (without a PASIV/somnacin).
Gravity-defying: Arthur can float a couple of feet off the ground if he so chooses.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: Hi. I have a question for everyone.
[ Arthur gets right to the point, as always. ]
I've heard that we imPorts can "register". With the government, presumably. I want to know the pros and cons of this "registration". Are you registered? Why or why not?
I know I'm doing this anonymously, but I promise, I'm no supervillain. Just a person, who is suspicious of governments - especially ones that kidnap innocent people and bring them to another world - who wants to live a quiet, private life. I understand this "registration" comes with certain benefits - I want to have freedom of movement, and I certainly don't want anyone to assume I'm a criminal just because I'm unregistered. But I also don't want to be beholden to the people responsible for kidnapping me, I don't want to be a government stooge.
So, to register, or not to register? I put it to the community. Thank you for your time.
